Nottingham Forest snapping up free agent Wayne Hennessey on a short-term deal makes a lot of sense.

While he is extremely unlikely to trouble No. 1 Matz Sels, deputy Carlos Miguel has only played two matches in English football since joining in the summer and third-choice Aaron Bott will be injured for the foreseeable future.

With 109 caps for Wales, Hennessey is extremely experienced, already knows the club and the players, is the archetypal ‘good character in the dressing room’ a la Scott Carson at Manchester City, and will presumably not be too expensive.

Yet he offers more solid cover than academy stoppers George Murray-Jones, Harry Griffiths, William Brook, Keehan Willows and Theo Avery-Brown in the short-term.

Former goalkeeper Nuno Espirito Santo will be well aware of the importance of the dynamics in the goalkeeping department, and in that sense you can see why they’ve gone for Hennessey.
