The reason behind Barcelona’s “unexpected” decision to part ways with Xavi has been revealed.
Agreement to continue training the team
The Spanish newspaper “Marca” has revealed the reason behind Barcelona’s “unexpected” decision to part ways with their coach Xavi Hernandez.
Xavi had made the decision to leave the club last January before reversing it. Last week, Barcelona announced that the 44-year-old coach would not complete the final year of his contract.
The Spanish newspaper reported that Xavi had met with Barcelona president Joan Laporta at his home some time ago and assured him that “he had full confidence in the current squad and would only make a few adjustments.”
The newspaper added, “That was the agreed-upon plan, so the coach’s position was welcomed.”
An unexpected surprise in Xavi’s relationship with Barcelona
It explained, “The surprise came a few days later. After the match against Girona, which Barcelona lost 4-2, Xavi changed his stance. He no longer wanted to make just a few adjustments but instead sought to significantly improve the team by bringing in several new players.”
“Marca” highlighted that the Barcelona coach prepared a report on this matter with the team’s sporting director, Deco, which “did not please Laporta, who felt betrayed by the coach’s change of opinion.”
It confirmed, “Laporta was not willing to part with many players because he believes the current team is good.”
In his first comment on his departure, Xavi said on Saturday, “These have, of course, been difficult days, but my conscience is clear. I was here for two and a half years. It wasn’t easy. But I believe we can be proud of the work we’ve done.”
